Frequently Asked Questions about Kindergarten

What documents do I need to enroll my kindergarten-aged child in school?
To enroll your kindergarten child in school, you will need to take the following documents:
Immunization record that is current
Social Security card for your child
Birth certificate (State issued)
Parent ID
Proof of residence (rental contract or utility bill with valid address)

What is the criteria a child must meet to be eligible to attend a kindergarten program?

A child must be at least five years of age on September 1 of the school year.

Is kindergarten mandatory?
No. Children who are five years old on or before September 1 are not required to enroll in kindergarten; however, students who enroll in kindergarten are subject to compulsory school attendance rules while they are enrolled.

My child isn't ready for kindergarten; can he go to prekindergarten instead of kindergarten?
No. Your child must be 4-years-old by September 1 of the current school year to enroll in the prekindergarten program and 5-years old by September 1 to attend kindergarten.

What is the class size for a kindergarten class and a prekindergarten class?
Austin ISD maintains 19 children in a prekindergarten class and 22 students in a kindergarten class.

Are there TEKS (Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills) or a required state curriculum for kindergarten?
Yes. There are TEKS for kindergarten. They identify the skills and concepts that five-year-olds are expected to know and are able to do by the completion of the kindergarten year.
